NATURAL BLASTING MEDIA
Walnut
shells are a less abrasive, gentler media material that
don’t pose a risk of damaging substrate surfaces during
blasting. Crushed walnut shells are a milder media
alternative to harsher materials like steel shot or aluminum
oxide.
Used in dry blasting applications, they strip the topcoat
down while leaving the undercoat, or substrate, intact.
Before walnut shells were used for blasting, users would have
to strip down surfaces to the bare metal and replace the
undercoat. Using walnut shell media blasting cuts out
these extra time-consuming and costly steps by preserving the
bottom layer. Its use in dry blasting also reduces time spent
on drying.
Walnut shells and other natural media are a good choice for
cleaning, deburring, grinding and polishing, and stripping of
softer substrates (plastics, wood, aluminum) because of their
soft material, angular design and weight. They’re
compatible with many types of metal finishing processes,
which may eliminate the need to buy multiple abrasive
materials. Since walnut shells are a reusable type of
media, it makes them very cost effective. They contain
none of the potential harmful toxins other abrasives may
contain and are biodegradable, making them safe for users and
the environment.
