DIRECT PART MARKING
Direct part marking provides part traceability by permanently labeling parts with identifying markers such as serial numbers, lot numbers, expiration codes, date codes, bar codes, and information rich 2D barcodes. These marks will stay with the part throughout its life cycle, that is up to 30 years for some U.S. Department of Defense applications, ensuring proper part identification for repair or replacement purposes.
Laser Production Marking
Although some methods of marking will mar the part's surface, non-destructive part marking can be achieved by the use of a production laser system. Such a system focuses a laser beam for a pre-programmed period and intensity based on the characteristics of the selected material, in order to "write" the mark, much like a tattoo.
The process is very efficient as the laser can be focused in such a way as to convert the intense laser light beam to heat which then mark sthe metal ,plastic, or natural material's surface. Other methods dent, scratch, and otherwise damage the material's surface, the impact of the laser marking system is comparatively minimal.
